The parish family of Mission Basilica San Buenaventura is pleased to welcome Fr. Maurice Harrigan, who has been appointed by Archbishop José H. Gomez as our new pastor, effective July 1, 2026.
Fr. Harrigan succeeds Fr. Tom Elewaut, who will continue to serve our parish as Pastor Emeritus.
This appointment follows a change in pastoral
assignments after Fr. Preston Passos, who had
been named our next pastor, resigned from the
appointment due to ongoing recovery and health concerns following open-heart surgery in 2025.
We continue to keep Fr. Passos in our prayers as
he begins a well-deserved sabbatical focused on healing and regaining the strength needed for
full-time pastoral ministry.
A native of Los Angeles, Fr. Harrigan is one of ten children raised in Glendale. He is a graduate of Mount St. Mary's Seminary in Emmitsburg, Maryland, where he earned both a Master of Divinity and a Master of Arts in Church History. He was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles in 1996.
Fr. Harrigan has faithfully served the people of God in a variety of pastoral settings. He served as pastor of Holy Trinity Church in Atwater Village for nine years before being appointed pastor of Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church in San Pedro in 2014.
His priestly ministry has also included serving U.S. Marines at Camp Pendleton, ministering to youth in state prisons, and working extensively with St. Teresa of Calcutta's Missionaries of Charity. For more than 30 years, Fr. Harrigan has traveled throughout the world providing retreats and conferences for the sisters. These experiences have deepened his appreciation for different cultures and strengthened his commitment to serving the diverse people of God.
As Fr. Harrigan begins this new chapter at Mission Basilica San Buenaventura, we extend to him our heartfelt welcome, our prayers, and our support. We also express our sincere gratitude to Fr. Tom Elewaut for his faithful leadership as pastor and are grateful that, as Pastor Emeritus, he will continue to assist in the sacramental life of our parish.

La familia parroquial de la Misión Basílica San Buenaventura se complace en dar una cordial bienvenida al Padre Maurice Harrigan, quien ha sido nombrado por el Arzobispo José H. Gómez como nuestro nuevo párroco, con efecto a partir del 1 de julio de 2026.
El Padre Harrigan sucede al Padre Tom Elewaut, quien continuará sirviendo a nuestra parroquia como Párroco Emérito.
Este nombramiento se produce tras un cambio en las asignaciones pastorales, luego de que el Padre Preston Passos, quien había sido designado como nuestro próximo párroco, renunciara al cargo debido a su proceso de recuperación y a problemas de salud relacionados con la cirugía de corazón abierto a la que fue sometido en 2025. Seguimos ncomendando al Padre Passos en nuestras oraciones mientras inicia un merecido año sabático para dedicarlo a su recuperación y fortalecer su salud antes de regresar al ministerio pastoral de tiempo completo.
Originario de Los Ángeles, el Padre Harrigan es uno de diez hermanos y creció en la ciudad de Glendale. Es egresado del Seminario Mount St. Mary's en Emmitsburg, Maryland, donde obtuvo una Maestría en Divinidad y una Maestría en Historia de la Iglesia. Fue ordenado sacerdote para la Arquidiócesis de Los Ángeles en 1996.
A lo largo de su ministerio sacerdotal, el Padre Harrigan ha servido al Pueblo de Dios en diversas comunidades y apostolados. Fue párroco de la Iglesia Santísima Trinidad en Atwater Village durante nueve años y, en 2014, fue nombrado párroco de la Iglesia María, Estrella del Mar en San Pedro.
Su ministerio también ha incluido el servicio a los Marines de los Estados Unidos en Camp Pendleton, el acompañamiento pastoral de jóvenes en prisiones estatales y una extensa labor con las Misioneras de la Caridad de Santa Teresa de Calcuta. Durante más de treinta años ha viajado por todo el mundo ofreciendo retiros y conferencias para las religiosas, experiencias que han enriquecido su aprecio por las distintas culturas y
fortalecido su vocación de servir a la diversidad del Pueblo de Dios.
Al comenzar esta nueva etapa en la Misión Basílica San Buenaventura, extendemos al Padre Harrigan nuestra más cálida bienvenida, junto con nuestras oraciones y apoyo. Asimismo, expresamos nuestro sincero agradecimiento al Padre Tom Elewaut por sus años de fiel liderazgo como párroco, y nos alegra saber que, como Párroco Emérito, continuará olaborando
en la vida sacramental de nuestra comunidad.
